The Hangry Bride (Part 2 of Weekend Series)

I left a little cliffhanger on the end of my post yesterday, so I will end you curiosity with the details from our busy Saturday. 🙂 It started off innocently enough. I woke up for a 9:45 a.m. hair appointment and scarfed down a whole wheat english muffin with banana and peanut butter in the car. I got my blonde touched up and my ends a nice trim before scheduling my final cut and color before the wedding. Yikes! That was a little surreal to do.

After the hair appointment, I drove to Jordan’s house to pick him up and head over to the Jewelry store to pick out our wedding bands. This was one of my “to do’s” that I didn’t mind doing at all. My band was already picked out because it goes with my ring, but it was Jordan’s first time looking at the men’s bands. It was a lot of fun seeing him try on different rings and teasing him for taking so long–he was picky and we were in there for an hour and a half!

IMG_1414IMG_1413

Jord ended up putting three bands on hold to think about. I have to admit, I got a little emotional seeing him with a ring on his finger. It made the whole experience a lot more real!

My stomach started growling in the jewelers and I remembered that I hadn’t eaten anything since 9 a.m. which is very unlike me. I am a snacker 😀 Once we left the jewelers we still had one more errand to run before lunch that I thought would be quick…I thought wrong.

Have you ever tried get things printed at FedEx? Well, it took so much longer than I thought and thank God for Jord, because the FedEx lady would not have lived to see another day had he not been in there with us. We needed to print maps and information insert cards for our invitations, so I saved everything on my flash drive to bring in for a quick and easy print. Well, I left the flash drive at home. . Fortunately, I had everything in my email so I was able to email the attachments to FedEx.The email didn’t work…You can see where this is going. Finally, they received my emails and we were able to print a sample of the map. Yay! They looked great and we printed. Next came the insert cards.

Well, the lady thought she’d be a designer and “stretch” my font to fit the cards. She printed a sample and I did not approve. After we got the stretching incident figured out, we printed another sample and I checked our wedding website to make sure it worked. It DIDN’T work. I typed it into my phone about 10 times and kept getting error messages. This is when the tears started to well up. I JUST wanted to send out my invitations!!!!

Jordan calmly told me to make sure I was using the correct website. When I checked the address against our Save the Date cards, I realized I had typed the wrong web address on the insert cards. DERP. Since I had my computer with me, I was able to edit the document and email it to FedEx again. They printed out more samples and FINALLY, we were done. Moral of the story…don’t expect any wedding tasks to take less than an hour to complete and marry a person who can handle stress. Jordan has the patience of a saint.

Remember my growling stomach at the jewelry store? By this point, my stomach had eaten itself and I was more achy than I was hungry. We went to Chipotle where I inhaled this salad.

Veggie Salad with black beans, brown rice, fajita veggies, guac and tomatoes.

After our bellies were full we hit up the suit store to find shirts for our groomsmen. This went so much more smoothly and we were in and out with a decision made in a half hour! We made our way over to the mall for a few returns and then it was off to Ohio for my bridal shower festivities! I was so exhausted from running around all day, but knew I had a long night ahead of me…and boy was I right.

See you tomorrow with part 3 of my emotional roller coaster ride of a weekend!

Have you ever been so hungry that you are past the point of no return?

I try not to ever let myself get to that point, because then I get “Hangry” –hungry + angry–and I end up eating junk just to get something in me fast. I know that one of my best friends’ Whit goes through this too. I was definitely at the Hangry stage on Saturday, but I am glad I had Jordan there to keep me on track and Chipotle was the perfect choice.

Energizer Bunny Part 1

Greetings! My 7th post on this blog is coming from a fried brain, so forgive me for any grammatical and/or spelling errors. We are still 74 days out from the wedding, but that is only 2.5 months people! The Knot tells me I have 91 to do’s left and I have only completed 71 items off of my checklist.

What??? I feel like I have already accomplished so much, yet I am not even half way through my list. “It will all come together,” says everyone when I start my frantic babbling. Well, yes–it will all come together, but that’s because I’ll be running around like a chicken with my head cut off for the next two months. Now, I understand why honeymoons were created–the bride and groom needs that break after a whole year of wedding homework.

The most terrifying thought? Every weekendfrom now until October 11 is booked solid with wedding-related to do’s or someone else’s wedding. Terrifying, yet exciting at the same time. I love to be busy and I love to check things off my list. What do I hate? Waiting on other people so that I can check things off. Patience is not one of my strong qualities. 😉 Anyways, this past weekend is a prime example of what I’m sure many weekends will look like for the next couple of months.

Friday night–I taught in a Zumbathon that lasted about 2.5 hours. I love instructing in Zumbathons. The larger crowd brings tons of energy, the music is turned up all the way and those strobe lights make me feel like I’m at a night club!

After the Zumbathon, I raced home to grab a quick bite to eat, shower and head back out for a friend’s bachelorette party!

The beautiful bride-to-be is in the chevron dress in the middle. 🙂 I met the big group of girls at a bowling alley. We then went back to her house for snacks and movies. I drove home around 1 a.m. to get some sleep before my busy Saturday.

You’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s post for my crazy Saturday. I’ll give you a hint, it involved joyful tears and…not so joyful tears.

Do you get energized from being non-stop busy, OR does it wear you out?

I get a lot of my energy from being crazy busy, but if I continue it for a long amount of time I get run-down and sick. When I was in highschool, my mom had to force me to have “down time” or I would run myself into the ground with activities.

Diets vs. Real Life

2 posts in 2 days. Who am I?! I am channeling my favorite bloggers, Fitnessista and Peanut Butter Fingers and trying to write more often. Another reason for the increase in postings is accountability. The more I talk about my healthy living, the more I want to keep with it!

I am trying to get in the best possible shape for my wedding this October. No, I’m not trying to lose weight, nor do I think I need to lose weight. “Diet” is a scary word that people love to throw around. To me, a diet is a quick fix to a problem, like putting duct tape on broken chair. Eventually, the chair is going to break.

I am constantly striving to live a healthy lifestyle by eating whole, clean foods, getting lots of sleep, and exercising. Living a healthy lifestyle is harder than a 5 day juice cleanse or a 2 month stint of no-carbs because it never ends. Your end goal is life (insert cheesy motivational speaker here)!

For real though guys, once you start practicing healthful living you will not only notice inches and pounds lost, but you will have more energy, clearer skin and a happier disposition. You CAN’T get all of that from a diet, you just can’t.

The hardest party is finding what works for you. You may have to try a different things out first. Maybe you HATE vegetables and have to sneak them into your smoothies to get your daily intake, maybe you don’t have time to workout and have to get up early to get it done and over with.

IMG_1314

Many different people have ideas about what it means to “eat clean” and what “whole foods” really are. You can do some research on your own, but I think it’s simple. Eating clean means putting the most natural, unprocessed foods into your body. It also means making sure you are getting enough protein, vegetables and carbohydrates to fuel you and your activity level. I am not an expert on healthy living, I definitely have my cake and eat it too! But, I also believe in balance. You can’t be a food nazi and never eat an ounce of sugar, salt or fat because let’s face it, sometimes you just NEED that donut. I’ve been there! The thing to remember, and what has helped me the most, is to enjoy that donut, cake or french fries and then get right back on track. It’s all about balance.

IMG_1315

So, how am I getting ready for the biggest day of my life? I am eating clean, getting tons of sleep, and exercising regularly. Yes, I’ll probably lower my sugar intake a bit and stay away from sodium and salts (bye bye pretzels twists) but I want to feel healthy on my wedding day–not deprived, hungry and tired.

Here are some really great ideas on how to eat clean and great recipes that I’m using to boost my healthy lifestyle.

Wedding Invitation Arthritis

Hello all! Happy Monday! Things are pretty busy over here with wedding planning. I am currently in the middle of addressing my invitations…Womp Womp. The first 20 invitations were super fun to write. I had a little Michael Buble going on Pandora and I was day dreaming about the big day.

Then, the cramps came. After invitation #101 I was cursing whatever wedding etiquette book I read that made me want to handwrite every single name and praying for a masseuse to fix my curled fingers. I gave up after invitation #102 and haven’t touched them since Saturday afternoon. Looks like I’ll be having another Monday night with Buble and “Hanson hands.”

And maybe something fresh for dinner? I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t get enough fresh fruits and veggies in the summertime. I gorge myself on watermelon, grapes and cantaloupe and can do some damage to green peppers, onions and avocados. I have a belief that if you put anything in a stir fry pan or wok, with a little sea salt, coconut oil, and lemon…it tastes amazing. Try it! The other night I made a side dish of  Zucchinni and added mozzarella cheese and fresh lemon juice as soon as it came off the stove. WHOA, talk about yum.

IMG_1309

The only thing that might be better than fresh vegetables for summer dinners are these babies.

IMG_1302

Oh. My. Gosh. Snyder’s Honey Wheat Pretzel Twists.  I tell Jordan to hide them from me sometimes because I can eat a whole bag in one sitting. P.S. Sorry about the dark photo and the wrinkly bag, I couldn’t stop myself from eating them long enough to get a decent picture (confessions of a snackaholic).

Hope your weekend was fun enough to make your Monday a little more bright. 🙂

Workouts that Multitask

Good morning! It’s Monday. Your favorite day of the week right? My Saturday was a whirlwind of wedding planning and Sunday was the exact opposite–a lake day. Lake days are my favorite part of summer because you’re outside with your friends and family–life can’t get any better than that! Lots of Cornhole, frisbee, water sports and boating are involved on our lake days.

IMG_1333

It was a beautiful day yesterday (we haven’t gotten many of those this summer) and we enjoyed it to the fullest. Jordan and I went to an 8:30 a.m. church service, then raced back to the apartment to change and head to the gym so that I could teach my 10:15 Zumba class while he completed a workout. Afterwards, we picked up Jimmy John’s to eat on the half hour drive to the lake.

IMG_1328

Jordan had a club sandwich and I ate a tuna UNwich…WORST DECISION EVER. I was trying to be carb-free healthy so I subbed out JJs delicious bread for the piece of watery paper they call lettuce…I have never had an UNwich before and I never will again.

Lesson learned: always always always go with the bread.

After I got home from the lake, I cleaned the apartment and came up with a full body strength AND cardio workout for you guys. When I want to do cardio and strength training but I don’t have time to do both, I just combine them into one fast, sweaty workout. This one I developed last night keeps you on your toes and it will fly by! I’m a lot like my favorite blogger, Julie from Peanut Butter Fingers,  and I get bored with workouts easily. Try this multi-tasking workout today.

Disclaimer: I am not personal trainer or physical therapist, please check with a doctor before making any new changes to your fitness routine.

Functional workout

Don’t know how to do some of those exercises? Click on the exercise to learn!

Tricep Dips (No bench in sight? Try these on flat ground while lifting one leg at a time)

Walking Lunges

Plank with leg lift

Burpees

My favorite thing about this workout is that you can do it outside!  This functional workout is a great one to do if you are just getting started with your running. The  short bursts of movement every 90 seconds really help break up the monotony of a long run.  This workout will leave you super sweaty and tone you up quickly. Have fun and let me know how it goes!

XoXo

Summer Saturday

Usually, my Saturdays in the summer consist of water sports and watermelons. This summer’s Saturdays have been a little different. 7 a.m. and my eyes fly open without the sound of an alarm. I bound out of bed and start on my to do list for the day. Why is it that on weekdays I can barely pry my eyes open to get to work on time at 8, but on weekends, I am bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7 a.m.?! For the love of Pete, it’s my day off!

These to do lists always have a workout and a wedding item on them. There is nothing quite like crossing an item off of your to do list is there? With only three months until the big day, the items on my list just keep getting longer and longer. .

.freakin-to-do-list

This morning was no exception and I woke up at the butt crack of dawn to get my day started. After a couple overeasy eggs and coffee, I started working on a little presentation for later. The item on today’s to do list is flowers!! My mom and I are meeting up with a couple of florists in Ohio to try to pick out the bouquets and table decor. I have tons of different ideas for flowers (thank God for Pinterest right?) so I have no idea what will come out of today but here are some options.

What do you think about these choices? I’m going for a sort of vintage, fall feel. Who knows, I’ll probably come back with something completely different. 😉 After the floral appointments, Jordan is meeting up with me for a marriage counseling session with our Pastor. Busy wedding day!

What are you doing on this summer Saturday?

Do you ever feel like you can sleep longer on weekdays, but when the time comes to sleep in, you can’t do it?

Here to Stay

I’m back! Did you think I’d type one post and then leave forever? No way, I’m here to stay for a while and this time, I promise I’ll be back with more posts. Now, since I said that, I have to hold myself accountable and actually post more than once every 2 weeks. 🙂 My goal is to eventually post once a day with recipes, workout ideas and random musings from this midwestern life. This is a pretty ambitious goal, but I’m determined to reach it. For a little while, I will have to be intentional about posting,  but I know that eventually, it will become a habit. Let’s get on with it though, because this isn’t an “About Me” post; I already wrote one of those.

This is my second post of many in the Striding Out blog series. It contains a little bit of everything I hope to bring the blog. Here’s what I’ve been doing the past couple of weeks…

A lot of eating…

Image

My favorite Sushi roll- The Philly Roll!. Yum!

Image

Gyros at Greek Fest

Oh, I could swim in that cucumber sauce. And no, that juicy flour pita is not a part of my bridal bootcamp plan, but it was SO worth it.

A lot of Zumba shaking… ImageThat was a 1980’s themed Zumbathon. Don’t judge, I know you’ve danced around the living room to “It’s Trickayyy”  once or twice in your life. If you haven’t…take a listen and just try not to do a little shoulder pop.

Image

And a lot of caffeine drinking….

Image

I am not a huge caffeine junky and have a rule to never have anything stronger than water past 10 a.m. but lately I have been NEEDING an energy boost in the afternoons and a handful of almonds just doesn’t cut it for me when I’m falling asleep at my desk to the sound of the pitter patter on the window… I think a big part of my midday slump has to do with all the rain that the midwest is getting. It’s not just a summer rain it’s like a monsoon in the jungle that lasts for days and weeks…Okay, so I’m exaggerating just a little. The rain has forced me to get things done inside though, including a few great strength training sessions.

I’ve been incorporating more Pilates-based exercises into my strength routine and loving the results! I’m seeing some lengthening in my muscles, which is always a good thing. Stay tuned for a post on toning your biggest trouble spots.

See you next time!
